THE MALAGA CITY COUNCIL FINISHES THE PROCEDURES TO OPEN THE PUBLIC PET CEMETERY IN THE COMING MONTHS

The Plenary Commission on Environmental Sustainability plans to definitively approve tomorrow the file for the start of activity and the rates for these facilities. These have already been built after an investment of one million euros and will be managed by Parcemasa.

The Malaga City Council is advancing the process for the commissioning of the public cemetery for pets, which will be managed by the municipal company Parcemasa. These are pioneering facilities in Spain, since the four similar facilities in other cities are private. The Plenary Commission on Environmental Sustainability plans to definitively approve on Monday 2/18/2024 the file that authorizes the beginning of the activity, as a local economic initiative, of this new equipment that is already built and conditioned for use, as well as the rates. and the modification of Parcemasa’s by laws to incorporate this new activity into its portfolio of services.

Once validated by the Environmental Sustainability Plenary Commission, at the end of the month it will be endorsed by the Corporation’s Plenary Session while the entity’s General Meeting will approve the change in the statutes. The last milestone will be the publication of the file in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP), thus completing a complex administrative process that will enable the opening of these new facilities in the coming months, which will fulfill the commitment made in the program. of Municipal Government 2023-2027.

The new Málaga pet cemetery, which is located on a plot of the Málaga Cemetery Park (San Gabriel), has involved an investment of 1,011,980.95 euros. The facilities have been built with sustainability and energy efficiency criteria and have a citizen service building (reception area, administrative office, office for veterinary use and toilets), crematorium and farewell room. Likewise, the site has a green space for the deposit of ashes and a burial area. In addition to cremations and burials, the cemetery will also offer other services such as the transfer of dead animals, celebration of a farewell ceremony, rental of niches and columbariums or deregistration of pets.

The creation of this pet cemetery responds to the growing social sensitivity regarding the respect and care of animals. In this sense, Málaga is the Andalusian province with the highest number of pets. According to data from the Official College of Veterinarians, there are more than 350,000 pet animals registered, which represents 23% of the Andalusian census, with no other facility of these characteristics existing in the region.

In the case of dogs, there are about one hundred thousand registered in the capital alone. A survey included in the market and economic viability study prepared for the project concludes that 89% of people with a dog in their care would hire one of the services offered by Parcemasa: cremation (64%), burial (54%), rental niche (42%), columbarium rental (45%), transfer (44%) and farewell ceremony (39%).

To determine the rates, the prices applied in other pet cemeteries in Spain and in animal crematoriums in the province have been taken into account, as well as the feasibility study carried out for its implementation. The rates for the services that will be provided are as follows:
