The Cervantes Theater celebrates World Opera Day with an open-air recital
The Cervantes Theater joins the celebration of World Opera Day with the free outdoor recital Voices for World Opera Day, which will take place next Sunday, October 25th, at 5:30 p.m., in Jerónimo Cuervo Square. The soprano Mela Pastor Hurtado, tenor José A. Sáenz, and bass-baritone Cristóbal Prieto Ortiz, accompanied on piano by María del Carmen Pérez, will perform seven pieces from the operatic repertoire in a 30-minute performance. This activity is part of the 38th Lyric Season of the Cervantes Theater, sponsored by Unicaja Foundation, funded by the Ministry of Culture, and in collaboration with Sando Foundation, idealista, and Ópera XXI.
The program will gather fragments from five operas and will begin with two excerpts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: “Là ci darem la mano” from Don Giovanni, and “Vedrommi intorno l’ombra dolente” from Idomeneo. From the Austrian composer, “Madamina, il catalogo è questo,” Leporello’s catalog aria from Don Giovanni, will also be performed.
The selection will also include “O Mimì, tu più non torni” and Musetta’s waltz “Quando me’n vo’,” both from La bohème by Giacomo Puccini; the duet “Tornami a dir che m’ami” from Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti; and the toast “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici” from La traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, which will close the recital.
World Opera Day is commemorated every October 25th, coinciding with the anniversaries of the births of composers Georges Bizet and Johann Strauss II. The initiative is celebrated in different countries to give visibility to a genre with more than four centuries of history and is supported by international institutions and associations, including the International Theatre Institute (ITI) and Ópera XXI, the Spanish entity to which the Cervantes Theater belongs.
